The Library Association Carnegie Medal shortlist

David Almond
Heaven Eyes
Hodder Children's Books

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It enticed me right from the start. I couldn't put the book down for a second, one night I even stayed up till 1 am in the morning reading! I was so involved in the book that it made me cry twice! My emotions were running high and low along with the characters. If this book doesn't win the award then you people obviously don't know what good reading is! I found this very boring at the beginning but the further you get into the book more enjoyable it becomes. At the start it was seriously unrealistic, and it smelt really badly of fish and chips like all new books do also read review of the fox and the amber spy glass!big up your mother!! Heaven eyes is a very good story, the symplistic language used makes it very good to understand. The stroy of Erin and her mum gives the impression of sadness, and when Erin meets Heaven eyes she just feels happy, and wants Heaven to be her sister. I am still reading this book, but so far it is excellent, i would recommend this book to anyone who would like to read it. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD STAY UP TIL 1AM READING, RIGHT ABOUT THAT TIME I AM SLEEPING....DAFT WEINER....

Melvin Burgess
The Ghost Behind the Wall
Andersen Press

this book is very childish and has a predictable ending but it is written very well and keeps interest throughout the book. it is has a boring cover which immediately drew attention away from the book which didnt turn out to be as boring as it showed. this book can drag on so i don't think anyone should read it unless they HAVE to.

Sharon Creech
The Wanderer
Macmillan Children's Books

this book is about wandereing about,. its changed my life i now wander more than any person in the world.

Jamila Gavin
Coram Boy
Mammoth

Coram Boy was an excellent read, and although the reader had to perservere with it to appreciate the full content, it was worth it. The author had managed to use an imaginative plot which allowed each character to be individual and still manage to entwine the characters together at the end for a fantastic climax and a suprising conclusion. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a different yet interesting story. Although it may not be suitable for those persons under 11, as I found the plot to be somewhat confusing to begin but all is explained at the end.

Adèle Geras
Troy
Scholastic David Fickling Books

Adele Geras has taken one of the most famous legends of all time, edited out anything of interest and turned into something mind-numbingly dull. A book which is as compelling and intriguing as saying the word boring 400,000 times in a monotonous voice. Homer's Illiad is full of warriors and adventuring, Adele Geras' 'Troy' is full of women gossiping and gives little referance to the war at all. This book condemns men, making them seem stupid and incompetent, All of the characters seem completely unbelievable. If you are interested in Mythology and flower-pressing you may find this book nearly readable, but it really isn't worth it. In short, it's a girly book and not even a good one. I really enjoed this book, as I am interested in Greek Mythology and the ancient story of Troy was "revived" incredibly well. I found it funny at times, such as when Aphrodite appears and how she gets bored and decides to play tricks on Xanthe and Marpessa. It is a long book and sometimes it dragged on a bit. You really have to have paitence with this book though and then you can unfold the beautiful story that awaits for you inside. I would give this book, 8/10 and recommend it to people who have paitence and an interest in Greek Mythology. This book interested me initially because I am interested in Greek Mythology and it had a vibrant front cover. I liked the way of writing even though I occasionally got confused between battle scenes and parts with the gods and goddesess. I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I allowed my self enough time to read it properly. All in all I'd like to have read this book properly as I found it interesting and it was obvious that further into the book the plot would unfold properly.

Alan Gibbons
Shadow of the Minotaur
Orion

This book got my attention by the cover as it is bright and the it looks interesting. I quite like this book but it takes a while to get into the actual plot of it, as it just explains about Phoenix in the game, so doesn't really tell you what is meant to be happening. I would advise this book to people, as long as they are patient and have time to read the whole book in quite a short time, otherwise they wouldn't really understand what was going on.

Beverley Naidoo
The Other Side of Truth
Puffin Books

the other side of truth is a moving story about an african family who are in a state of shock due to the death of the mother/wife. Sade and femi are getting ready for school but are sent to london due to their mum who was shot accidently after the gunners missed their papa. the book is good to start of with but trails of in the middle when "ade" and "yemi" arrive in london and are left alone with out their father or uncle. "The other side of truth" is a very powerful and moving book. It not only covers the ideas of asylam seekers, but puts across the theme of racism. This book is very well researched by the author Beverley Naidoo which makes the book accurate which makes the book very moving to the reader. This book makes you feel very sorry for Sade and Femi and you can build up a good picture in your head about how they are feeling. This book is the best book I have read in a long time. The theme is one that I feel very strongly about and I think it is a good way to put across the way racism is portrayed in our country; with books like this it will help people learn about the topic. Maybe one day it will help to change the way people think about people from different countries and races. The other side of truth I found that this book was very moving especially at the beginning as Sade and femis mother got shot but it was actually ment to hit there Papa but missed. I would rate this book a 9/10 as it drags along a little bit in the middle when Sade steels from mariams uncle deles shop but i also enjoyed the end part of this book as the whole family got reunited and it was very touching.

Philip Pullman
The Amber Spyglass
Scholastic David Fickling Books

this is the mother of all books it is well fat but enjoyable as you get into the book the plot unfolds and keeps you hooked it is rather large and also has the title on the back which is rather strange but also an ingenious and interesting new way to put text onto a book and as this book is fantastic and thrilling read, it only seems fitting that it has an equally good cover
